Another Friday, another story.
Today we will share the rest of the story for young Steve Jobs and his work at Atari – one of the biggest gaming producers back in the 70s. – Steve Jobs.
Steve after India
In our previous post, we shared how did Jobs end up being hired by Atari`s engineer Al Alcorn. Moreover, we shared some insights on Steve`s spiritual trip to India. After his return Jobs had shaved his head, wore Indian traditional saffron robes. Some believe that after his trip he changed his personality and became more focused and determined to succeed.
Jobs started working for Atari again and oversaw the Breakout game project. The story of the Breakout game is controversial and many question the actions of Jobs back when working at Atari and later when he and his friend – Steve Wozniak founded their own company which will become one of the most successful tech corporations in the world.
Steve and Steve
After Jobs was assigned to work on the optimization of the circuit board of the arcade game. To minimize the number of chips Atari was willing to pay up to $ 100 for each removed chip. The count was reduced to 46 whereas so far, the games required around 100 chips. However, back then no one knew that Jobs was not the technician behind this. Instead, Steve Wozniak, who was not an employee for the company but spend many nights with Steve at Atari was the hands of the operation. What happened later was that Jobs shared with his friend half of the $700 he said they earned from the project and hide the fact that Atari gave him an additional $ 5 000. Wozniak did not learn about the additional $ 5 000 until years later.
Whether or not Wozniak was going to be mad about Jobs` finding the additional bonus of the game is irrelevant now because after the success of the Breakout game they founded their own company. The company was aiming at designing a personal home computer. An interesting fact is that even Al Alcorn from Atari helped in the creation of the Apple I and Steve Jobs offered the product to the company. The product was not accepted in Atari and Jobs, accompanied by Wozniak who was never an official employee of Atari left. On April 1, 1976, they founded the Apple Computer Company.
We hope that the story of Jobs and Wozniak can bring you enough motivation to finish the Friday. We, at RetroPyxel, are just as much eager to share our passion for retro gaming with you.
Enjoy the weekend and see you next Friday!
