History
Street Fighter aka in Japan ストリートファイター, Hepburn: Sutorīto Faitā), is a fighting video game franchise developed and published by Capcom. With its initial release in 1987, followed by five other main series games, various spin-offs, and crossovers, and numerous appearances in various other media is one of the most exciting games to play on a console and arcade. The best-selling release of the game was in 1991 – Street Fighter II. Street Fighter II set the trend and inspired many more companies to produce one-on-one fighting games. Moreover, the franchise is considered to be one of the highest-grossing video game franchises of all time and serves as one of Capcom’s flagship series with total sales of more than 46 million units worldwide as of March 31, 2021. On top of all that it is also the highest-grossing media franchise of all time based on a fighting game at $12.2 billion.

The beginning – 1987
The original Street Fighter video game was designed by Takashi Nishiyama and Hiroshi Matsumoto. The plot of the game provides the player with the opportunity to play as martial artist Ryu, who competes in a worldwide martial arts tournament between 5 countries competing among 10 opponents.
A multiplayer option is provided by Capcom where a second player can join in and plays as Ryu’s friendly American rival, Ken Masters. The player can perform three punch and kick attacks, each varying in speed and strength, and three special attacks: the Hadōken, Shōryūken and Tatsumaki Senpūkyaku, performed by executing special joystick and button combinations.

How it developed
Street Fighter was ported and integrated into many popular home computer systems of the time, like the PC. In 1987, it was released on the NEC Avenue TurboGrafx-CD console as Fighting Street. It was later included in Capcom Classics Collection: Remixed for the PlayStation Portable and Capcom Classics Collection Vol. 2 for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox.
Everything was running according to plan up until when the Internet hit hard. During the “boom” of the Internet Street Fighter V was introduced and it got negativity for being incredibly incomplete. The main reason was not the 16 starter characters, but because the internet stuff was busted, there was no arcade mode, and the “story mode” was a bunch of lengthy and uninteresting cutscenes occasionally broken up by 1-3 matches that were frustratingly simple with no option to change the difficulty. Over time, Capcom finally released a cinematic story mode called “A Shadow Falls” and even later upgraded the game into Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition.
As you can guess that was not the end for the franchise and they keep producing improved products with more interesting characters and “universes”. Street Fighter has an overall interesting storyline and great characters, but trying to make sense of the continuity can be a headache at times.
Not only do games take place out of order, but upgraded versions of games (ie. Street Fighter III: Second Impact or Super Street Fighter II) are a whole new story with a different chapter completely which distinguishes it from the other version and flavors of the game.
Exactly this unique and interesting plot makes Street Fighter one of the most played game ever. You can play any version of the game on our powerful and authentic consoles in order to experience and decide for yourself which is the most interesting flavor/version and feel free to give your comment below.

Good article, is it possible to share more retro gaming facts? maybe for a different game (GTA, Mario games, etc)?
